The birth of Port Salut®
Port Salut® was created in 1816 by Trappist monks at the Abbaye du Port du Salut in Entrammes in the Loire Valley. The brand "Port du Salut®" was officially registered in 1874 and thereafter became commonly known as Port Salut®.
Up until 2005, Port Salut® was produced in the original grounds of the Abbaye du Port du Salut. And although the production facility has now moved, it continues to be made using the traditional recipe created by the monks back in 1816.
Port Salut® World
- Port Salut® continues to be made using the traditional recipe originally created by the monks back in 1816.
- By 1873 it had reached the Parisian market and the weekly delivery was so eagerly awaited that a flag was raised announcing "The Cheeses have arrived!"
- Port Salut® is distinguishable by its bright orange rind.
